What this statement covers

This statement covers apps.hex.pro: the page for each of our apps, the browser tools, the Hex NFC development costs and donation page, and the privacy policies and terms published here. The Hex NFC documentation is included too, with the limits described under Known limitations. The apps themselves run on your own devices and are not covered here.

The standard we aim for

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

Partially conformant means that some parts of the site do not fully meet the standard yet. Our own checks still report a few small problems, and the larger limitations we know about are listed below, along with the testing we still have to do.

What the site offers

Display settings

The Display button at the top of every page opens these settings; on smaller screens it is inside the menu. Each one takes effect straight away and is saved in this browser, for this site only. Nothing you choose is sent to us or to anyone else.

Pause motion
Stops the animations, including the moving artwork behind each page and the app videos, and holds that artwork on the frame it had reached.
Plain background
Removes the artwork behind each page, which is then not drawn at all, and leaves a plain dark background.
More contrast
Makes quieter text brighter and the edges of panels and controls clearer.
Reduce transparency
Makes see-through panels, such as the bar at the top and the menus, solid, and turns off the film grain.
Text size
Makes the text larger, in three steps up to one and a half times the usual size.
Legible font
Sets the text in Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface whose letters are hard to mistake for one another, everywhere except the logos.
Underline links
Underlines every link, so that links do not rely on colour to stand out.

When your device already asks for reduced motion, more contrast or reduced transparency, the matching switch is shown as on, with a note saying why.

The browser tools keep nothing you give them. A Display setting you change on a tool's page is still saved, because saving it is what you asked for.

Settings on your device

The site also follows these settings from your device or browser, with nothing to change here:

  • Reduced motion: animations stop, and each moving background shows a single still frame.
  • Increased contrast: the site uses its higher contrast colours, as More contrast does.
  • Reduced transparency: panels become solid, as with Reduce transparency.
  • Forced colours, such as the contrast themes in Windows: the site takes on your colours, and parts drawn only in colour, such as the switches and the donation progress bar, are redrawn in them.

Language

The site is in seven languages: English, Chinese (Simplified), Arabic, Spanish, Japanese, French and Brazilian Portuguese. The Language menu lists them, each in its own language. Every language has its own address, so a link you share opens in the language you were reading.

If your browser asks for another of these languages, a small notice may offer to switch, once. It never switches for you.

Keyboard and zoom

  • The first press of Tab on any page shows a Skip to content link, which jumps past the navigation to the page's content.
  • Links, buttons and other controls are outlined while they have keyboard focus.
  • Menus and panels close with Escape, and focus goes back to the button that opened them.
  • When you follow a link to another page, focus moves to the start of that page and screen readers announce its title.
  • Pages fit a window 320 pixels wide, which is what 400% zoom leaves of a 1280 pixel screen, without scrolling sideways.
  • At the largest text size, text is not cut off and nothing overlaps.

Known limitations

  • Screenshots of the apps show their English interface. Their captions and descriptions are translated.
  • The Hex NFC documentation is written in English. Its menus and notices follow your language, and its pages are marked as English so that screen readers use an English voice.
  • The privacy policies and terms are translated as a courtesy. The English text is the binding version, and every translation links to it.
  • Donations go through Stripe Checkout, and the contact form on hex.pro uses Cloudflare Turnstile to filter out automated messages. Both are run by other companies, and we cannot fix accessibility problems in them. If either one stops you, email us at [email protected] and we will help another way.
  • The single-file offline versions of the two browser tools, which you can download from each tool's page, have problems we have fixed but not yet released: choosing a file is hard with a keyboard alone, and some messages are not announced to screen readers. The tools on this site's own pages use a different interface and are not affected.

How we tested

We have checked the site in these ways:

  • Automated checks with axe-core against the WCAG 2.2 level A and AA rules, on every page in each language it is published in, at desktop and phone sizes.
  • Journeys made with the keyboard alone: the skip link, opening and closing the phone menu and reaching every item in it at 320 pixels wide, following a link to another page, the Display settings in the bar and in the phone menu, the Language menu and the donation form.
  • Every page at 320 by 256 pixels, the space 400% zoom leaves on a 1280 by 1024 screen, checked for anything that runs off the side.
  • Every page with text at its largest size and the legible font on, at desktop and phone widths, checked for text that is cut off, runs off the side or overlaps.
  • Reduced motion, forced colours and more contrast, simulated in the browser on a sample of pages, with the automated checks run again under each.
  • The contrast of every text colour the site uses, measured against each background it appears on, in every app's colour scheme.

We have not yet tested the site by hand with a screen reader. We plan to, starting with VoiceOver on Mac and iPhone.
